Damian Ross Dear Fellow Martial Arts and Self Defense Enthusiast,

I want to "Thank You" for stopping by and I'm glad you finally made it here. There are a lot of well-meaning, ms-informed experts out there and it's great to see you managed to navigate past the hype and the "cartoon characters" to find us.

If you don't know me by now, my name is Damian Ross, a martial arts and self defense instructor with over 30 years experience in competing, coaching and instructing thousands of law enforcement officers, special forces military operators and civilian men and women in martial arts and self defense. I've been featured in Black Belt Magazine; worked security details from concert arenas and gentlemen's clubs (in my younger days) to the Grammies, the Yankees and the Fox News Network here in New York City. But more important than that, I've had the honor and the privilege to be taught and mentored by the who's who in martial arts and self defense. I hold black belt ranks in traditional martial arts, Judo (2nd Degree Black Belt) under Yoshisada Yonezuka, Tae kwon do (2nd Degree Black Belt) and I have a full teaching license (4th Degree Black Belt) in the reality close combat, martial arts system of Tekkenryu Jujutsu. I received my rank in this incredible martial art directly from its founder.

Time is valuable, so let's get right to the point...

Did you know about the deadly problem in the world of martial arts and self defense?

Over the past three decades there have been a lot of changes in martial arts and self defense, but none as unfortunate and dangerous as right now. There's always been confusion between what martial arts, combat sport and self defense are and the old "my style of martial art is better than your martial art" debate continues. But the problem is not about what martial art or self defense system is best, it goes far beyond that. So let's get to the heart of the matter and ask the question:

Is what they teach you at your local martial arts studio or what you see on TV going to save your life or get you killed?

Due to the increasing popularity of martial arts on TV, in movies and mixed martial arts (MMA) like you see on the Ultimate Fighter, more and more people are becoming interested in the martial arts, but at the same time, more and more people becoming confused about the subject of self defense. Every form of traditional martial art and martial sport have their place. They both build character and get you in great shape, but can they save your life in an attempted rape or homicide?

Martial Arts Are Good For You,
But Are They Good For Self Defense?

The benefits of studying the martial arts are legendary. Traditional martial arts like Karate, Aikido, Kung fu and combat sports like Mixed Martial Arts, Judo, Wrestling, Tae Kwon Do, Thai Boxing, Boxing and Brazilian Jujitsu will all give you life long benefits and are worthy endeavors, but will they give you the tools you need to survive an all out, knock down, drag-out street fight?

Martial arts and martial sports develop character and get you in shape, but when it comes to self defense, you'll discover they fall drastically short under the stress of real combat. To help set the record straight, below is the list of "deadly" assumptions even the most intelligent people make about the martial arts and self defense.

Do you make these assumptions about martial arts and self defense?

The 7 Deadly Assumptions
Even The Most Intelligent People
Make About Martial Arts And Self Defense

  1. Martial Arts and Martial Sports Will Work In Real World Conditions
Mixed Martial Arts, Judo, Brazilian Jujutsu, Wrestling and Boxing are designed for sport. They are made safe with rules and protective equipment. All of the lethal techniques and attacks to target areas that would seriously injure your opponent are removed (and not even taught). The referee is there to protect you against harm. The mat provides a soft, forgiving surface. If you are injured, you can stop the fight, if you are tired, you can quit, if something hurts, you can tap. This is all for good reason, no one wants to see athletes getting seriously injured. But in the real world of self defense, there's no one to throw in the towel, no gloves or hand wraps, no referee to stop the fight and it can happen at any time. There's only you and determined, capable criminals.

  2. Sport Martial Arts Teach Lethal Fighting Methods
Lethal techniques are illegal; you'll NEVER need them in the ring so there is no need for you to learn them. Why spend time on training something that will only get you disqualified? Training is about developing the proper habits. What you practice is what you will do in competition. If you practice illegal moves you probably will have a short lived career in the octagon. Chances are your trainer doesn't even know the real dangerous techniques required for effective self defense. He's lived a life of training and coaching a sport martial art, that's all he knows.

  3. You Can Use Sport Techniques In The Street
The good habits you work so hard to develop in martial arts and martial sport are the same bad habits that will get you killed in a self defense situation. When you are under the stress of a real fight, you follow your training. When your training has taught you to play by the rules of a sport or follow the etiquette of a martial art, then you will. You will instinctively avoid essential target areas and critical opportunities to end a street fight in your favor. It's true, at the end of the day, a punch is still a punch and a kick is still a kick, but when you're tangled up with someone (and a group of his friends) who doesn't care about rules, regulations and time limits, you've got a serious problem. You need to end it fast. To do that there's only one way to train and one method.

  4. Traditional Martial Arts Teach Modern Self Defense
Training in a traditional martial art is great. You can develop confidence, inner strength, get into awesome shape and become part of a community. But the martial art you're studying is teaching you self defense that's based on a completely misinterpreted set of circumstances.

The self defense techniques taught in the vast majority of martial arts studios, are taken from early Japanese jujutsu systems. These methods were designed to be used against a samurai warrior who wore armor which weighed about 75 pounds. He moved slower and striking him was out of the question. Your best bet would be to grapple him, get him to the ground and use what ever close quarters weapon you had to finish him off. Some of the wrist locks and methods of defense taught in traditional dojos may have worked under these circumstances. But against a determined, fast moving assailant, hell bent on getting what he wants you're going to wind up in sorry shape.

The only place traditional martial arts techniques appear to work is in the nice forgiving confines of the dojo. In typical martial arts training, you practice until every player knows their part. Under these friendly conditions, these self defense methods seem to work. Your training partners attack at the correct angle and distance, they react like they're supposed to and the result is what's expected.

But in an icy parking lot at 2:00am against a determined group of attackers, it will get you killed. While you wait for an "attack" it will be all over. This has been proven time and time again. There are many stories of the black belt who wound up on the wrong end of a junkie looking for his next fix. Keep the martial arts in the studio and put the self defense on the street.
  1. If It Works In The Dojo, It Will Work In The Street
There is an old training maxim: "If it looks good in the dojo, it WON'T work in the street". Martial artists like to keep things neat and tidy, but that only works in the movies and at martial arts demonstrations. In self defense, fights are messy and chaotic. They happen at the worst possible time under the worst possible conditions. It's a struggle, it's ugly and your ability to adapt to anything will increase your chances of going home. The only way to prepare for a real fight is to prepare for the chaos. You can't predict what your attacker will do, but you can control what you're going to do. You must build a method of self defense that can be "hardwired" into your instinct that will allow you to adapt to any situation in a blink of an eye and destroy even the biggest, nastiest predator of them all.

  2. There Is A Specific Self Defense Counter For Each And Every Attack
This is one of the biggest pitfalls of all the martial arts: The notion of proscribing a specific self defense or a counter technique for each individual situation. This seems plausible on the surface; but when you start combining different attacks to different situations, the number of counter defenses would lead into the thousands. Then add the environment to the equation, that number goes into the millions! As I mentioned before, there are a few simple strategies and techniques that can be applied to EVERY self defense situation.

  3. You Will Be Able To Remain Calm And Think When You Are Attacked
Most people believe that because they train, they will be able to react intelligently and precisely when assaulted. No matter how intensely you train and compete in martial arts contests, no matter how real you make your martial arts training, the fact of the matter is, you know that your training partner is not trying to kill you! There's a big difference between increased heart rate from physical exertion and hormone induced increased heart rate from fear, which leads us to the biggest problem with all martial arts and self defense today...

    ... IS YOU!!
(And there's nothing you can do about it.)

When you're under hormone induced stress (Fear), your body prepares you to protect yourself. As your body gets ready for battle, you experience the effects of a massive adrenaline dump and millions of years of evolution take over.

When fighting for your life you will experience:

  • Loss of fine motor skills (even making as fist is difficult)
  • Loss of cognitive thought (speech becomes impossible)
  • Tunnel vision (you lose your peripheral vision)
  • Loss of depth perception (you can't judge distance)
  • Auditory Exclusion (you can't hear everything)
Complicated martial arts or subtle martial sport techniques in real self defense situations becomes impossible. Most people in real fights report that they simply "Black Out". Imagine being so upset, frightened and enraged that your mind simply "checks out!". In order to function in this condition you need a method of self defense that is hardwired to your instinct. The only way to do that is with natural, correct, precise, repeatable techniques and strategies practiced in a way that makes them instinctive in the shortest amount of time possible. Fortunately there is a system that prepares you for ANY self defense situation imaginable.

The Self Defense Solution To The Martial Arts

What if I told you that you can begin training in this system of self defense RIGHT NOW and you don't have to get on a plane, go to Tibet and hire a Sherpa and find the last great martial arts "master" to do it. Heck, you don't even have to leave your house!

Too good to be true?...I'm sure there are some of you out there that wish it were, but there's ONLY one documented method of self defense combined with a scientific, proven method of training it and you won't have to find a martial arts instructor, join a school, enroll in an expensive and lengthy martial arts program or even put on a fancy uniform to do it.

If you want to spend the next 10 years and $20,000 trying to learn how to fight for real, go ahead. But if you want to learn how to cut through the BS and become a one man (or woman) wrecking crew for a minor fraction of the cost and time then keep reading...

How This Self Defense System Works

This self defense system utilizes a select handful of natural, instinctive and convulsive combat proven techniques taken from every major martial art in the world. This self defense is not pretty, neat and clean like you see in the movies. It was not "conjured up" in a martial arts school by a 10th Degree Grand Master. This self defense system was designed and developed by two super power governments and field tested under the worst possible conditions.

"These techniques have been used by soldiers and assassins alike and are as useful today as they were when they were discovered. It is dynamic, brutal, simple and guaranteed to work. PERIOD."

Self defense is not a martial art or even a martial sport. Self Defense is a methodical system that is applied to a specific set of common denominator circumstances found in every possible scenario.

This System of Self Defense Gives You:

  • The technique that takes full advantage of your gross motor skills (No more intricate and complicated martial arts movements)
  • The methods you can apply to any self defense situation (There is no need to memorize the infinite number of specific defenses inherent in all martial arts systems)
  • The ability to defend yourself without the use of protective gear, rules, referees or a soft mat (the martial arts studio, the dojo, dojang or gymnasium are nice, but the real world has concrete, rocks, broken bottles and debris - there is no one to help you and no one to throw in the towel)
  • The training to recall your techniques easily and quickly anytime, anywhere. (watching a martial arts video is nice, but you need to practice in order to make your knowledge effective - how you train is even more important than what you train!)
  • The confidence to protect yourself, even if you are sick, injured or even older (chances are you will be attacked when you appear to be an easy target. Your method of self defense can't require a lot of strength or athletic ability. What you would do when you're 20 isn't necessarily what you would do when you're 50 or even 40!)
  • The skill to defend yourself in any and every environment (snow, sand, parking lot or your kitchen)
  • The focus to execute high percentage, high impact and sometimes lethal techniques (imagine taking only a handful of the best self defense techniques of all of the martial arts and applying them with the proper attitude to ANY situation)
  • The pride in knowing that you will be ready to protect yourself and your loved ones and go home safely - no matter how big, or how bad your assailant is.

Do Not Be Misled!!!!!

If you think you can just pop in a martial arts dvd, read a book and automatically become a 'HUMAN WEAPON' then you're about to be severely disappointed. You can't read an article, watch a clip and be ready for a physical conflict with someone who doesn't care what style of martial arts you know, how many seminars you attend or who you took your picture with. But if you want to know the hidden secret of REAL SELF DEFENSE, then keep reading.

Which brings me to my next point...

Why That Martial Arts And Self Defense Video You Just Purchased Won't Do You A Stitch Of Good
(no matter how great you think it is).

The reason is simple: Most martial arts and self defense videos are in a typical martial arts demonstration format.
They don't give you any method of training. They demonstrate a technique and expect you to get a training partner and figure out how to train it on your own.

But knowing exactly what to do is only half of the self defense equation...

TRUTH BE TOLD: HOW YOU TRAIN IS ALMOST AS IMPORTANT AS WHAT YOU TRAIN!

The mission of The Self Defense Company is to give you the best of both worlds: proven methods of self defense taken from every martial art on the planet and put them into scientific methods of training designed to give you the most out of your time. Minimize your investment of time (and money) and maximize your effect (your ability to defend yourself).

Don't misunderstand me, martial arts and combat sports are nice (I have 3 Black Belts and Several National Championships in Judo, Wrestling, Karate and Kick Boxing), but in the real world without this technique and this training , all 5' 8", 175 pounds of me would have wound up a statistic!

If you want to have supreme confidence in your ability to fight off the wolves, survive and WIN in a real fight, then all you're going to have to take this next, small important step. It's time to....

STOP WATCHING AND START TRAINING

I know I'm going to ruffle feathers and burst bubbles, but watching a video and posting on a forum doesn't mean you can defend yourself. Paying $2,000 a year at your local martial arts school doesn't automatically mean you can fight either (playing tag with foam booties with your friends is fun, but it's not defending against an attempted homicide or rape).

If you think your ability to protect yourself and your loved ones is based on how many videos you own, books you've read or "certifications" you've received in the mail, then YOU HAVE COME TO THE WRONG PLACE MY FRIEND. Go back to the mixed martial arts (MMA) blog, post on the self defense forums, pontificate about what you think will work and pray that you don't find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time!

But if you're ready to see how you can make the most of your investment and actually acquire self defense skills, quickly and easily through scientific self defense training then TAKE THE NEXT STEP NOW.

This is not a martial arts style, it's a self defense system that can be added to your current training program seamlessly. There are no uniforms to wear, no classes to attend, just you and your desire to protect yourself and your loved ones from harm. (your friends will never know what hit 'em!).

The Eight Simple Rules
of Self Defense
  1. Always trust your instinct.
  2. Never trust your assailant.
  3. Assume your assailant will be larger and stronger than you.
  4. Assume your assailant will be armed.
  5. Assume your assailant will have accomplices.
  6. Assume your assailant is determined and campanile
  7. Assume you will be distracted or injured and appear to be a good target of opportunity.
  8. Assume you will be in the worst possible environment.

“The Best Self Defense Training I’ve Ever Seen!”

Hi Damian,
I recently received module 1 from the "The Self Defense Training System". To date I would say that the material I received is the best that I have purchased or even seen!  Everything about the product/module is "First Class", product presentation, training content, and the instruction from yourself.  "It definitely is first class"!
How many products are their out there, where firstly you watch a Instructional DVD, you then go onto watch the Practice and Drills DVD and then you are provided with a Training manual that takes you by the hand and shows/tells you how to practice and how to train the drills.  "It could not be any easier".
"Great work to you and all those involved in this project Damian".  I can not wait until I receive module 2!
Kind Regards and Thank You,
Andrew Hannah, Northern Ireland, UK.

“BJJ Fighter Finds He Can Still Train Injured”

The Self Defense Training System is great and it's especially timely for me. I've been training BJJ for almost 10 years and I've got a sports hernia that has kept me from any rolling since November. Since I received the SDTS, I've been able to train with your materials even with the injury. I especially like the "how to train" aspect of it.
Best of luck with the program, I'm looking forward to the rest of it.
James Nesbitt, Detroit, MI

“Something EVERY Martial Artist Should Know”

I've been watching all night and am on the 3rd cd. I think it's great! It's something every martial artist would feel stupid for not knowing and what others would think is genius.
I've kind of got to think hard on this, I'm definitely going to keep training. I can’t wait to get to the weapons modules. Thanks for sending the test drive!

"Citizen Puts The Local Crack Dealers In Their Place!"

Dear Damian,
I live a hard life. I watch when I wait for the bus, especially because it is a crack dealer corner.  Last month, two crack dealers, upset at my presence, passed me front to back, and I went into full combat mode!!
One of the dealers then fronted me and mumbled something to my face while I heard the other approach me from the back. I moved instinctively and convulsively as the two men rushed together into the space I made for them.
As I turned to “finish the job” They took one look at me, looked at each other and made tracks! Thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge.
You are the most realistic fighting teacher on the net.

Sincerely,
Mark Young

"University Student Finds Her Inner Power!"

Dear Damian,
Kudos from Canada! I really like the Self Defense Training System. The demonstrations are practical, can be done and are easy to learn. When you demonstrate power it teaches me how to be powerful.

Thank You, Thank You Thank You!

“Finally a Direct and Honest Approach To Self Defense Training”

Damian,
I wanted to thank you for the excellent information you are sharing in The Self Defense Training System. I had ordered another close combat training course recently and I can honestly say that I learned more from Module 1 “Essential Self Defense” than I did from the entire package of fluff I received from the other company!
Your teaching style is direct, honest and you don't hold back from giving the students more than their monies worth. I compliment you on your ability to take information and break it down into digestible bites that can be learned quickly and easily.
Keep up the good work and again, thank you.
