Before we get started, let me introduce myself. If you don't know me already, my name is Damian Ross and I've been training people in Combatives since 1992. I hold three black belts, won a wide variety of championships in Wrestling, Judo and Karate. I played college Division 1 sports (wrestling and football) and I even did Private Security for a number of years (Everything from body guarding to bouncing). Like you, I thought I knew what self defense and martial arts was, but deep down I knew something was missing.
In 1984 I started training in Tae Kwon Do, and with a substantial amount of success in wrestling behind me I found myself working nightclub and concert security to make some extra cash. Needless to say that I had my share of real life self defense experiences and truth be told, the self defense I was learning in the dojo had no resemblance to what I experienced in the real world. The martial arts I learned didn't reflect what really happened in the street. I never got attacked the way I was taught, and more importantly, I never reacted the way they told me I was going to react. To be fair, my martial arts instructors said some of the right things, but what we practiced and how we trained were way off base and if it wasn't for my wrestling I would have been in some serious trouble.

"Combatives" Reveals the Truth About Self Defense
Combatives Pioneer W.E. Fairbain Demonstrates lethal knife fighting techniques at an undisclosed location
In 1989 a close friend in law enforcement introduced me to something called "Combatives". Combatives is a method of self defense designed to train soldiers and police officers who were faced with life and death situations on a daily basis. Modern combatives began in the rough and tumble streets of Shanghai, China in the early 1900's where the British run Shanghai Municipal Police had to deal in extremely hostile environments. Combatives reached its peak in World War II when hand to hand combat was an essential, tactical component for winning the war. These hand to hand, knife to knife and belly to belly methods were a used in raiding parties and special operations. Men trained in these tactics would be deployed at night to wreak havoc on enemy soldiers specifically to gather intelligence and decrease enemy moral. These methods were also taught to OSS Operatives (The OSS would later become the CIA). The successes of these methods soon spread and shortly after a number of allied Special Forces Units were taught these lifesaving skills. The reason why combatives was so successful in the field is because unlike martial arts, combatives hasn't any forms, ceremony or sport. In combatvies there is only one goal: Defeat the enemy in the fastest means possible, fair or foul.
Over the next several years we developed a system of training that enabled us to use modern learning and teaching methods to build a solid combatives foundation. We continued to eliminate the martial arts sport and ceremony based techniques until only the most combat effective remained. This method of self defense evolved into the Self Defense Training System (SDTS) Combatives Program.
The Self Defense Training System (SDTS) uses principles of combatives that have been proven over many decades of actual warfare. The number one principle of the SDTS is offensive, aggressive and ruthless attack, not a defensive mindset. The SDTS is not a martial arts system; it is a system of realistic and effective close combat that will allow you to gain the tactical advantage as fast as possible using whatever means possible. This includes unarmed techniques, knife fighting, club and other impact and edged weapons. The primary purpose of the SDTS Combatives is to save lives.

As we began to evaluate methods and tactics we devised a simple set of rules by which all methods we judged. This way we wouldn't prejudice any one technique based on our own traditional martial arts and sports training. The tactics and the purpose always come first and the techniques second. The following are those criteria known as the "Eight Cardinal Rules of the SDTS":

Your techniques must work on someone much bigger and stronger than you.
Size is a key factor when criminals chose victims. Unlike martial arts and sports where you're matched by size, sex and ability, in the real world you'll be facing someone who is out of your weight class, younger, stronger and if you're a woman, you will most likely be attacked by a man. In SDTS Module 1 you will discover techniques designed to work on much larger and stronger attackers regardless of your size, age, man or woman.
You must be able to defend yourself when you're sick, injured or older
Criminals, like all predators, chose the sick and the weak for an easy score. The elderly, the small and the weak in appearance get attacked. Professional football players do not. In SDTS Module 5 and Module 9 you will learn how to use small (and legal) weapons to defeat your attacker even on your worst day.
You cannot use "Specific Defenses" because they don't work
Martial arts train you to do specific defenses against specific attacks. If someone throws a punch, you defend one way, when they grab your wrist, you defend another way. While in the dojo, among friends this may appear to work, but in the parking lot when you're trying to locate your car at 1:00am against an angry and violent attacker, it's a different story. Any hesitation in the real world will cost you valuable seconds and that could mean the difference between survival and failure. In SDTS Module 4 and 8 you will see how easily you can apply the methods you learned in SDTS Modules 1, 2 and 3 to any type of attack. When you train in the SDTS you install a fundamental set of universal techniques. This way you will just react instantly, before it's too late. So instead of having 10 different defenses for 10 different attacks you will have one defense for 100 different attacks.
You must assume your attacker is armed
According to the Police Uniform Crime Report in over 75% of violent crime arrests, a weapon was present. That means even if you don't see a weapon, you can assume your attacker has one. How can you be sure under low light conditions that punch isn't a stab? In SDTS Modules 1, 2, 3 and 4 you'll discover tactics that will prepare you to fight efficiently and effectively whether your attacker has a weapon or not.
You must assume there is more than one attacker
Your attacker will stack the odds in his favor and sometimes that means using accomplices. Most times you won't even know they're present as they hide or pretend to be an innocent bystander. In SDTS Module 1 you will learn how to use movement to avoid being "jumped" by multiple assailants. As you move through the Modules you will discover how to take advantage of your momentum to avoid, reveal and survive a multiple assailant attack.
Your attacker has intent to injure or kill you
You're not a mind reader, how on earth can you make the assumption that your attacker doesn't really want to hurt you? If someone is willing to use force on you, they obviously don't care about your wellbeing. In SDTS Module 1 you will discover how to determine in seconds your assailant's intentions and in most cases it's as simple as "walking away".
You must prepare for every possible environment
The matted floor of your training area is nice, but it's not real. In the real world there are chairs, concrete, curbs, tree stumps, rocks, ice and sand. In SDTS Module 1 you will see how easy it is to use one method of footwork to maximize your stability and balance. In SDTS Module 3 you'll learn how to land on the hard ground or concrete safely and minimize your time on the ground where your vulnerable to weapon and multi person attacks.
The techniques must be simple
When you experience hormone induced stress, better known as FEAR, something "Gross" happens. You can only use your gross motor skills. When your body mobilizes for fight or flight it moves blood from your extremities (fingers, wrists, and arms) towards your large muscle groups and organs. This results in a loss of finite motor skills. In other words complex wrist locks and manipulations are not even possible. The Self Defense Training System uses core gross motor skills and then trains you to apply those skills to any possible situation.
The techniques and methods used the SDTS program come from all forms of martial arts. Like we said, "any means at your disposal, fair or foul". History has shown us that an "all in" doctrine to fighting is the best. The SDTS is like mixed martial arts for the street, except there are no rules, we use weapons, gross motor skills and we try to end the fight as quickly as possible knowing full well that our enemy may have a weapon and friends.

Mr. Ross,
I recently had an experience that I would like to share with you. Perhaps you could share it with your other students and give my any advice if this happens in the future.
I along with my partner who is approximately 5'5" and weighs approximately 160 pounds were recently was involved in an arrest of a violent subject and I used some of the techniques I learned from The Self Defense Company.
I am 5'7" and weigh about 213 pounds. The weather was bad, there was a steady rain and it had been raining all day so the ground was wet and slippery. The fight was on a sidewalk with grass and concrete on a very well traveled road. The bad guy was 6' tall, weighed between 280 and 300 pounds and under the influence of illegal drugs.To make a long story short I grabbed the bad guy to arrest him, he resisted and we fell to the ground with the bad guys body weight on top of me.
I found myself unable to get my legs wrapped tightly around his waist and put him in the guard and along with the rain and wet ground made it easy for the bad guy to break the hold. I immediately and don't really know how cause it happened so fast I managed to climb on the bad guys back and he easily threw me off his back. I don't know how I did it but I was able to get the bad guy on his stomach and I was able to wrap my legs around his waist, extend and lock out my legs on the ground forming a base while attempt to hold the bad guy down with my upper body weight till my back up arrived. The bad guy was able to get to his hands and knees several times but I was able to keep my body weight on him while on the ground. Then the bad guy attempted to remove my weapon from my holster and I immediately applied a choke hold from Module 3 of the Self Defense Training System (http://www.theselfdefenseco.com/module03.asp). He did not get my gun.
To finish the story I was able to keep him on the ground with my feet firmly planted and applying my body weight from moves I learned from you and The Self Defense Training System (http://www.theselfdefenseco.com) and I want to say they along with my partner and never quit attitude kept me from getting seriously hurt. I only sustained a couple sore ribs and a lower back strain. The bad guy was also tased several times and that had no effect. Just the training I learned from The Self Defense Company and my sheer will, determination and heart kept me from getting seriously hurt.

The 300 Pound Man with 300 Pound Friends
Imagine being attacked by a 300 pound, armed man who has the experience and is intent on harming you or your loved ones. Oh and of course he has 300 pound friends who are even more mean and nasty that he is. The "test" is will your current training and experience enable you to survive the 300 pound man and his buddies? The goal of the SDTS is to enable you to survive this scenario. I know this sounds a little extreme and if you do decide to pick a fight with your local professional football team, this may happen, but we train with this scenario in mind because we prepare you for the worst possible situation on your worst possible day. If you practice to survive under these circumstances, imagine what you will do to your average sized attacker!

Self defense is a life skill, not a life style. In the Self Defense Training System there aren't any forms to memorize; stances to remember, or foreign languages to learn. Meet Your Instructor, Self Defense Company CEO Damian Ross
3 Black Belts, International Competitor, Division 1 Collegiate Wrestler, Hall of Fame Athlete, Security Agent, Private Contractor and Bouncer, Mr. Ross has been in the mix since he was a wee-little ass kicker. In 1998 he began training scores of people in what would become The Self Defense Training System. Over the years Secret Service Agents, Federal and Local Police, Military, members of the Famed NYPD and Private Contractors have traveled over thousands of miles and paid top dollar just to train for an hour with Mr. Ross.
Realizing the demand for this ultimate form of self defense was too great for him to do by himself he launched The Self Defense Company (SDC) in 2007 to certify and train people using new distance learning techniques implemented by leading universities. Despite the economy at the time, the SDC exploded on to the scene and has left all other forms of martial arts and self defense stuck in the 1980's.
When Mr. Ross is asked why the SDTS is so successful, he just shrugs and says, "People know the real thing when they see it. The SDTS was created based on necessity.
