Why I Don’t Have A Retirement Plan… Damian Ross The Self Defense Company I could care less about retirement. I know my financial friends are going crazy right now, but let me explain. What do you think of when you picture retirement, white shoes and belts, eating dinner at 3 in the afternoon? This seems to be the end of the American dream or most people. Work like crazy, save a little (if you can). Maybe you’re lucky enough to have a pension or enough investments to live off of, you till will get old, bored and when society is “done with you” you will be ignored, which is probably worse than being broke. I know this may sound a bit bleak and void of all compassion, but not without a solution. Fortunately there is still away or you to be respected, sought after as a resource and a mentor until you go to the dig dojo in the sky. Teaching martial arts is this secret. First, it never goes out of style. It solves the one of the basic needs of each and every one of us; safety, fitness and mental health are always in style. Trends may come and go in the martial arts, but their will always be room for experience and knowledge. You will always be sought after by younger instructors and strangers. It doesn’t matter what your bank statement says, there will always be someone who can put to good use the knowledge you have spent a lifetime acquiring. As long as you can communicate, you will have a place to call home. You will always stay sharp. When you retire you have a tendency to vegetate. It’s like you’ve been working, active and solving problems for years and then one day you stop! I’ve seen this happen to too many relatives. Businessmen to carpenters, when it came time to retire, they just stopped everything. Your mind, like your body, needs to be worked. If it’s left alone, it will atrophy. You must continue to build, create and solve in order to maintain and grow. Instructing martial arts is one of the few activities that keeps you physically moving while challenging you mentally. Believe me, running, lifting weights or riding a bike doesn’t cut it. Teaching martial arts is one of the few vocations that has its own “retirement” plan built in. Right now I train, study, teach, write, spend time with my family and friends and manage my business. I’m also lucky enough to be able to help others do the same through the Tekkenryu Instructor Program and the Self Defense Company Professional Instructor Program (we even have a few instructors who are doing this FOR their retirement). What will I be doing when I retire…pretty much this, but at a little slower pace. Don’t wait to start planning for the future of your mental, physical and spiritual health. |

Links to Martial Arts Articles A Brief History Of Martial Arts in the Modern Military Many martial arts are derived from military combatives; the study of hand-to-hand combat and martial arts in warfare. After all, the term "martial art" means "art of warfare." For example, the sport or judo comes from jujutsu, which comes from samurai grappling, which was part of the training Japanese warriors received as preparation for battle. Many weapon-oriented martial arts, such as iado, kendo, kyudo and naganata-do originated in schools of martial techniques for warriors. These weapons, the sword, bow and arrow, and pole arm, were the assault rifles and machine guns of their time--the default weapons of military fighters--and as such were key components in combat training. The Western interest in East Asian Martial arts dates back to the late 19th Century AD, due to the increase in trade between America with China and Japan. Relatively few Westerners actually practiced the martial arts, considering it to be mere performance. Edward William Barton-Wright, a railway engineer who had studied the martial art Jujutsu while working in Japan between 1894–97, was the first man known to have taught Asian martial arts in Europe. He also founded an eclectic martial arts style named Bartitsu which combined jujutsu, judo, boxing, savate and stick fighting. William E. Fairbairn, a Shanghai policeman and at the time a leading Western expert on Asian fighting techniques, was recruited during world War II by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) to teach UK, U.S. and Canadian Commando and Ranger forces Jujutsu. The seminal self-defense book Kill or Get Killed was written by Colonel Rex Applegate, who worked closely with Fairbairn to train the "First Special Service," a joint U.S. and Canadian army unit; it became a classic military treatise on hand to hand combat and created the reality based martial art "Defendu." Modern variations that can still trace an authentic lineage to Applegate are very few . The undisputed "father" of Modern close-combat is Carl Cestari who had a direct relationship with both Colonel Applegate and WWII self-defense pioneer Charlie Nelson. In 2006 Carl Cestari was named one of the top 10 "Most Dangerous Men On The Planet" by Black Belt Magazine. Seeing the need to bring these legitimate and proven techniques and method of close-combat back into the Modern world of "hobby" Martial Arts (Karate, Kung Fu, Capoiera, Aikido, etc.) and "sport" Martial Arts (Judo, Brazilian Jui-jitsu, Wrestling, Kick Boxing, Mixed Martial Arts, Ultimate fighting , etc.), one of Cestari’s top students, Damian Ross and his instructors have dedicated their lives to teaching, instruction, and spreading the "truth" about Martial Arts, street fighting, self defense, and close combat.
